A Guide To Choosing The Perfect Wedding Veil

For some brides, the veil is the finishing touch that completes their whole wedding look. For others… not so much.

Personally, on my own wedding day, I always knew I wouldn’t be wearing one. The style of my dress just didn’t feel like it needed it, and that’s the most important thing to remember when choosing a veil, it should complement your overall look, not compete with it.

Once you’ve decided you do want a veil though, you suddenly discover there are endless lengths, styles and options to choose from. Birdcage ? Fingertip ? Cathedral ? Blusher ? It can feel a little overwhelming.

So we’ve put together this simple guide to help you when choosing the perfect wedding veil to suit your dress, personality and wedding style.

1. The Birdcage Veil

If you love the idea of a veil but don’t want anything long, heavy or likely to get caught in the wind during your couple photos, a birdcage veil could be perfect.

Chic, elegant and effortlessly stylish, this shorter style works beautifully for vintage-inspired weddings, city weddings and brides wanting something a little different.

2. Shoulder Length Veil

A shoulder-length veil is ideal if your dress has lots of detail you still want to show off, especially beautiful back detailing like lace, buttons or intricate beading.

Usually around 20 inches long, this style adds softness without hiding your gown.

3. Elbow Length Veil

Often considered the “classic” veil length, elbow-length veils typically measure around 25 inches.

They create lovely movement and elegance while still being easy to manage throughout the day. This style works particularly well with fuller ballgown dresses as it naturally finishes where the skirt begins.

4. Fingertip Length Veil

One of the most popular choices for modern brides, fingertip veils are usually around 36 inches long and incredibly flattering.

They add elegance and drama without overwhelming your dress, making them a perfect option for gowns without a long train.

5. Knee Length Veil

Looking for something with a little more impact ? A knee-length veil could be the perfect middle ground.

Typically around 45 inches long, this style pairs beautifully with fitted dresses and simpler silhouettes, adding movement and softness without the full drama of a cathedral veil.

6. Floor Length Veil

As the name suggests, floor-length veils gently brush the floor and usually measure around 72 inches.

They create such a romantic, flowing look and photograph beautifully during outdoor ceremonies and couple portraits, especially when there’s a little breeze.

7. Cathedral Length Veil

If you’ve always dreamed of making a statement as you walk down the aisle, a cathedral veil is hard to beat.

Usually measuring between 120 and 144 inches, this dramatic style extends beyond the train of your dress and brings timeless elegance to your bridal look.

Perfect for grand venues, church ceremonies and brides who love a little drama.

8. Blusher veil

A blusher veil is the section of the veil that covers the face before being lifted during the ceremony.

For many brides, it’s a timeless and traditional touch that creates a beautifully emotional moment during the aisle reveal.

Our Top Tips When Choosing A Veil

Think about your overall look

Your veil should complement your dress, not overpower it. The two should work together beautifully.

Match the detail level

If your gown is simple and elegant, you can often be a little more adventurous with your veil by adding embellishments, lace edging or sparkle.

Choose your hairstyle first

Your hairstyle can completely change how a veil sits and feels, so it’s worth deciding on this before making your final veil choice.

Big curls ? Position matters

If you’re planning glamorous curls or lots of volume, your veil will often sit best pinned higher on the head.

Take your veil to your hair trial

This is such an important one. Always bring your veil and accessories, including tiaras, clips or hair vines, to your trial so you can see the complete look together.

Final thoughts for choosing the perfect wedding veil

Choosing the perfect wedding veil should feel exciting, not stressful. The right one will not only suit your dress beautifully but also help you feel completely you on your wedding day.

And remember, whether you go full cathedral drama or skip the veil entirely, the most important thing is choosing a look that feels natural, comfortable and true to your personality.
